I'm a "published author" - take that all you English majors, hehehe!

Ran two more 5Ks on the treadmill - I did end up springing for the annual fitness center membership. Think I'll just do a 3K tomorrow though.

Church was canceled tonight. I applied to two clinical research related positions today. Aaaaand...that's about it.

I did the "20 random things about me" post.

I was inspired by Sarah's initiative and created a group for our church too.

It's only 5 days til Blacksburg (and Fazoli's!), 15 days til G.N.O. @ The Melting Pot, 116 days til graduation, and exactly 6 months til VACATION.

We saw "Slumdog Millionaire" today. I highly recommend it. It'll definitely be a purchaser once it comes out on DVD.

As of the forecast right now, it *might* be warm enough to run outside next Sunday. Two trips to the rec center until then. And the aforementioned trip to B'more to get my printed dissertation copies, which are finally back from the binder.

Wii Fit yoga tomorrow too.

*Not only* did I run for 30+ minutes straight, the second day in a row...

*Not only* did I meet my goal of 20+ total miles by today...

*Not only* did I meet my goal of 2.25+ miles per day for three days...

I've logged a grand total of 22.07 miles (!), ran for 36:58 today (!) at an 11:16/mile pace (!!) and completed a distance of 3.27 miles (!!!)

This is the first time I've run 5K+ in about 8 years :-)

(I know it seems all I ever post about lately is running, but it's about all I'm accomplishing at the moment...)

New Park

Decided that as soon as it's warm enough (who knows when :-P) I'm going to mix it up and start going to the South Germantown Recreational Park. They have a 2.5 mile loop around the outside of the trail (Bohrer Park is only 1.1 miles). We've been there before, to play minigolf or walk the "Heart Smart" mile-long trail but the 2.5 miler will be a nice challenge.

Not-so-lazy Friday?

I did run yesterday and today. Yesterday was harder, because it was cooler (though not as cold as usual, so I wound up overdressed and had to take my fleece off about 10 minutes in) and there was still snow on the park path in the more shaded areas. Today was *nice* and we just ran around the neighborhood (M came with me) but even with all the hills I managed to make it the full 30 minutes today as well as logging at least 2.25 miles. I had planned a few days ago to run at the park on Saturday afternoon (was supposed to be a high of 38 or 39, I think) but now it says high of 35 and very windy so I'm not sure. Counting tomorrow, it's now supposed to be lousy for six straight days :-( Stupid weather. I haven't bettered my times either - been focusing on getting to that 30 minute mark.

Just hanging out here tonight. We played Tetris Party last night on the wii (and Matt kicked my butt thoroughly) and are going out to dinner tomorrow night and to see a movie on Sunday afternoon. Might play some wii sports tonight after dinner :-)

My printed/bound dissertation copies are ready, so I'm going to Baltimore on Monday to pick them up...woo. Have to take one to my advisor and send/bring one to my parents - haven't decided which yet. Maybe we'll go down one Saturday for dinner or something.

I'm surprised at how quickly this month seems to have gone, even though I'm not doing as much during the day as I used to.

Time updates

Best mile = 10:54; best 3K = 20:22!

I tried to run a full 30 minutes today but couldn't quite make it. I hadn't run (or exercised at all, bleh) since Thursday so I suppose it's not that bad. It's going to be nice Thursday and Friday so I'll try to squeeze outside runs in then. I decided not to get the rec center pass just yet since one of the jobs I applied to (and want) offers a fitness center on site. I didn't want to commit to the $160 only to get access to a free facility later, so I thought I'd hold off a bit longer and see if that goes anywhere.

Lovely inauguration. I enjoyed it thoroughly in HD from my nice warm living room :-)

Stop...shower time!

Feelin' kinda Sunday

Apparently I suck at picking Superbowl picks. The Eagles lost and the Ravens are losing :-(

I decided to get the annual fitness center pass. Though I realized tomorrow is a holiday and I'm not sure if they'll be open or not. Guess I'll have to call and see. Holidays don't mean much to the unemployed, heh.

Update 1: Yeah, I definitely suck at picking the Superbowl.

Update 2: I applied for a job at the National Science Foundation. If I get an interview, I think it'll be fun to tell them that I was first funded by the NSF when I was 11 :-)

I'm thinking about getting a yearly pass to the rec center gym. I think I'll use it enough. And I have the $160...I had been saving up every month since last summer to go back to the day spa in the Outer Banks. But I'm only half way there (not enough to do much) and I figure if I get a job, I can replace the money later and if by chance I don't, it would be better to spend it on something I can use all year than something that's gone in 2 hours?

I like to move it move it

So, I chickened out with wearing the shoe inserts while running today. The package said it could take 1-2 weeks for your feet to adjust to them, and I thought they felt kind of funny still. So I ran normally, and wore them around the house for about 2 hours or so afterward. I'll try wearing them for a half day tomorrow and maybe by sometime next week I'll feel comfortable running in them.

I do like running on a treadmill though. My best mile is at 11:30 today (though for some reason the website is correct while my ipod still says 11:50) and I beat the other girl in the 3K challenge by 15 seconds today. Matt McHugh keeps passing me in distance every time I get a leg up on him though. I do wonder if some people in the group just don't sync after every run and they're going to sneak up at the end with like 50 unaccounted-for miles. Also, people in the world are gaming the leaderboard. Someone allegedly ran 362 miles in a week, or a 5K in 10:54. For those of you who aren't interested in doing the math, the former is two marathons per day and the latter is a 3:31 mile split (the world record is 3:43.13). Cheaters!

I e-mailed today about the job I interviewed for last week; they said I should hear by the end of the month :-/ Not much else on that front at the moment. My cleaning project today was scrubbing the stove, especially the burner pans (yuck). I need to vacuum and such tomorrow because we're having people over this weekend.

If you're still using my Hopkins e-mail address, I have no clue how much longer I'll be able to access it. I'm currently using courtney dot silverthorn at gmail.

14.5 days til Blacksburg!

Harper's Index

A retrospective of the Bush era - rather interesting stuff, though I'm certainly not going to track down all their numbers. Sounds like a job for Snopes!

Websites for which I have read (or am reading) the archives:

- Stuff White People Like
- Sexy People
- Sorry I Missed Your Party
- Cat and Girl (still working on this one)
- Natalie Dee
- Married To The Sea
- Superpoop

I also scrubbed the bathtub (yesterday) and the kitchen floor (today). Got my mile time down to 11:50 and my 3K down to 22:22. I've had a bit of shin pain in my left leg, I think from my feet rolling inwards (stupid arches). Since I can't afford new shoes at the moment, I decided to try a pair of arch support orthotics ($18). I'm planning on going to the rec center tomorrow to run inside since it's going to be below freezing for the next 3-4 days, so I'll give them a try and see what happens. In the meantime, I did the Wii Fit strength training full spin today and even used added hand weights on some of the exercises.

Funemployment, Day 21

I have officially been jobless for three weeks now. It's actually been a good bit of a breather. Had some time to sleep in a bit in the mornings, working on some cleaning projects that I wouldn't normally do on a regular basis (today I cleaned off the top of my dresser) and have been spoiling Matt by having dinner ready when he gets home and clean clothes in his closet/drawers all the time. My days have been more or less the same: getting up between 9:30 and 10am, spending 20-30 minutes in front of my lamp while reading my daily bible assignment, coffee and then doing the "daily" housework - dishes, making the bed, etc. Throw in my extra daily cleaning project (tomorrow I'm taking care of all the filing/shredding) before lunch. I've been working out after lunch (either running or the wii fit) and then putzing around reading or watching TV or whatever until Matt calls to let me know he's on his way home and I start dinner. I have bible study on Wednesday nights and have been volunteering on Friday afternoons as well as Saturday mornings (which helps me keep track of what day it is, haha).

In addition to the Nike+iPod system, I have two other great programs on my iPod. The first is Lose It (free), which I've been using to keep track of everything I eat and how much I exercise. It's very simple to use and I like knowing that I'm not constantly overeating now (especially this past weekend, where we went to dinner parties three days in a row). The second is Habits, for which I paid $0.99 and enjoy immensely. It's just a simple little program that lets you enter habits you'd like to track and how often you want to do them, and then reminds you when each habit is "due" and keeps track of how often you do them on time or skip them. I'm currently 100% on flossing right now, for example, which is quite an accomplishment.

I currently have 18 active resumes out at the moment, and one of my "habits" is to apply to one new posting per week.

My best mile is down to 12:39, which is pretty good considering a) I can't even remember the last time I ran prior to this year, b) I've only ran four times so far, and c) three of the four times I've run further than just one mile. I ran at Bohrer Park today, which was pretty nice. And flatter than our neighborhood! I'm planning on running there again tomorrow, and I'm torn between trying the 3K again or just running a mile to see how fast I can do it. Decisions, decisions!

I got my shirt (see below) in the mail the other day and wore it to dinner Sunday night. I couldn't believe that nobody said anything about it!

Calculator rubbish?

There is a calculator on the internet that estimates your body fat percentage, and according to their math, I (at 32.39%) am just barely obese (32%+). I admit to carrying some "junk in the trunk" but it seems a bit of a stretch, since a BMI of 22.46 puts me solidly within the normal range (18.5-24.9) and a waist-to-hip ratio of 0.72 is considered to be a low health risk. Anyone else want to try and either post or IM me their results?

(PS - cross-posted to my Facebook page, so you can respond there as well).

UPDATE - I believe there is an error in their calculator program, because when I do the math out myself using the formula they list, I get a much more respectable and healthy 26.47%.

Happy January to me

Sometime within the next 3-7 days, this T-shirt will be mine:

Rawk on :-)

Are you listening, Randall Munroe?

I LOVE xkcd today! I would totally get it as a poster or something.

My widget is finally working, woot!

Interview tomorrow, Let's Dish and church on Wednesday, volunteering Friday and Saturday. Venison party this weekend?

Happy New Year!

I only seem to have good Januarys in odd-numbered years, so I've got high hopes for seeing both a Hokie win tonight and a great job offer in the coming weeks. Hope all five of my readers are doing well after their respective debaucheries last night (I am) and here's to a great 2009!

UPDATE: 16th consecutive bowl game appearance, Hokies win over Cincinnati 20-7!
