Surprise update

So I interviewed on Thursday, and they said they would be making a decision within the next two weeks. I had assumed, being a government entity, that they would be taking the full two weeks (and perhaps then some) to decide. Imagine my surprise when they called me yesterday afternoon and offered me the position!!

I am SO excited about this, for a ton of reasons. One is that it's *A* job - I was beginning to get pretty bored at home, and frustrated with the job search efforts. But not only that, it's pretty much exactly what I wanted. This was the first job I had applied to when I started looking back in October (once I knew that I was actually going to be finishing grad school in 2008) and both the position and the office itself seem like they're going to be an excellent fit. And it also doesn't hurt that I'm pretty much getting a 70% raise from my last salary! I do still have a ways to go before I'm making more money than Matt, but I'm okay with that...for now :-)

Matt's mom had told me several times throughout this whole ordeal that she was praying that God would open up just the right door, and close tightly all the others. And that's exactly what happened.

I'll be learning more next week about my exact start date and such - I know it'll roughly be mid-March. And doing lots of paperwork. By the time it's all over I'll have been funemployed for roughly 11-12 weeks.

SOO excited!!

Another one bites the dust

Carly and Eric get the cool Queen song slash life event connection for their foosball win at MD states last weekend. I get...the fact that the patent office is under a hiring freeze. Smashing.

I hope it won't matter, because I had what I thought was a pretty good interview at the NCI yesterday and they said they'd let me know within two weeks - they want the new person to start before the old one leaves at the beginning of April. My only worry is that the person leaving has a JD, while the other fellow has a PhD and I don't know if they'd prefer to keep a "balanced office," so to speak, by choosing to replace a JD with another JD instead of a PhD. We'll see I guess.

Two more days left this month to run. I'm starting to feel pretty tired but have a shorter run planned for today so hopefully I can grind out one more longer run on Saturday.

I had a dream at some point last night that woke me up feeling very unsettled, but for the life of me I can't remember what it was about.

Did you hear about the new potential advances in the flu vaccine? Right now the flu vaccine has to be selected every year based on statistical predictions of prominent strains. Some researchers found an antibody against a *stable* molecule that nearly every strain contains, so if the animal models and clinical trials pan out, in about 5-7 years we might be able to get one flu vaccine and be covered permanently against nearly every form of the virus. That's pretty cool!

Leaving in about an hour to go get my volunteer on (been working on a Bioethics text these days) then quick run at the gym and quick shower before I head up to White Marsh for dinner. Bertucci's is one of those restaurants that doesn't put their nutritional information online (and as Jim rightly pointed out, that probably means "you don't want to know!") but I figure salmon and spinach is a much safer bet than a giant bowl of pasta swimming in some butter&cream sauce.

The randomness of teh intarwebz

1 - Go to Wikipedia. Hit “random”
or click
The first random Wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.

2 - Go to Quotations Page and select "random quotations"
or click
The last four or five words of the very last quote on the page is the title of your first album.

3 - Go to Flickr and click on “explore the last seven days”
or click
Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

4 - Mash it all together to your liking using Photoshop, MS Paint or such. Enjoy.

As for me, I'm rather looking forward to my new album release:

Have the rules changed?

VERY thoughtful discussion topic - have the rules changed in the financial markets? Short answer - likely not. I especially liked comment #3, and am looking forward to checking back for more responses.

Logged close to 9 miles in the past 2 days, and going for about 12-14 more by the end of the week...

Going to the Maryland-Duke game Wednesday evening after church!!

My Bond-Girl inspiration for Mark's birthday party:

I want my hair to look like that :-)

Put in another 5 miles today. Had to get rid of those oh-so-yummy creme brulee calories! Plus I'm maintaining my distance right behind first place in the Nike+ challenge this month.

Two months

Man, today was a busy day. I had to get up early to go to the grocery store (and Starbucks, yum). Did some laundry/stuff around the house in the AM, then off to a RFBD session - currently recording a book on bioethics. Back home to change and grab a piece of fruit, then to the gym - ran 2 miles and then biked 6.5 miles. Came home, showered, wrapped gifts for Matt's aunt and cousin, then over to the Sakura in Fair Oaks Lakes for dinner. I had hibachi shrimp and scallops, yum. Came home for more laundry and made the creme brulees for dessert Sunday night. Whew!

AAAAAAND I finally got an interview for the tech transfer fellowship at the NCI! It's this Thursday. I'm really excited! Even though it's been two full months of unemployment so far.

For some reason I am fascinated by this site: Adventures in Bentomaking.

Church tomorrow, visiting Dottie, quick lunch and then home to finish cleaning before team LaCroix gets here.

I buy it

End of Recession in 2009?

Maybe that means I'll have a job by the end of the year...

Okay, so the VW commercials are a little silly. And for some reason I think it should be the Babymaker9000 instead of 3000. But you can go here and upload pictures of you and your S/O (or favorite celebrity) and make a "Routan Baby."

Well when you put it THAT way...

I supported the half-mil cap on CEO salaries until I read this article. Now I understand that it's clearly impossible for them to afford their multiple vacations, their summer houses in the Hamptons, charity gala gowns, private nannies and tutors and trainers and chauffeurs, and all the rest of the accoutrements that they've certainly earned, on a salary of only $500,000.
/end sarcasm

That's more money than M and I have made in our entire marriage.

I'm at nearly 14 miles so far this month. Gonna do 5K tomorrow and 3K on Tuesday, then cross-train on the bike Wednesday. I am GOING to win the distance challenge this month!

New record

I feel like I'm running a lot harder than I did a few weeks ago, but I still can't seem to get my 5K under 34 minutes. And even's still a long ways off from my former "glory." I did get my distance extended to 4.5 miles. I'm totally going to take down the distance prize this month in our group!

Not quite a record yet - back in the summer, I predicted that I should be hitting the 1000th post around February 5th, 2009. Given that this is the 7th and I'm only on post #974, I've clearly been slacking off.

Missed connections

You were pedestrians at the intersection of Georgia and Forest Glen. I had the silver Ford Focus, and the green light. I'm a 20-something with about 200K miles of driving experience and a mean reaction time, as evidenced by my stellar whack-a-mole abilities. I was not intoxicated, tired, on a cell phone or otherwise distracted. I was also preparing to turn right at the light and therefore was not only traveling slower than the speed limit allowed, but also already had my foot over the break. I hope you were sufficiently thankful for all these facts when you decided to run across an eight-lane highway and right in front of my car.

You're lucky this was a "missed connection."

More archives

Finished reading the archives of One Sentence and Cake Wrecks. I found out about both these sites on Bits and Pieces, of which I am not close to finishing the archives.

Jobs? Two postings were outright canceled. Two more were filled without ever contacting me. Down to 15 actives, only half of which I'm *really* interested in.
